The Curtain Club was a legendary venue back in the day with particular significance for the city's LGBQT community. Such was its role that it can be seen now of great importance in terms of the city's social history and cultural heritage.
It opened originally in the mid 1940's as a Gentlemen and Ladies Arts Club but soon gravitated into becoming a rendezvous for the local gay community and there are many colourful accounts of how The Curtain Club evolved over the years until it's eventual demise in the early 1980s.
Many talk of the vibrant atmosphere and cutting edge music to be found there whilst others recall it as a safe haven and a refuge from problems encountered in their daily lives.
